Writing

I'm trying to think of some new writing ideas to try this summer. I've completely given up on my NaNoWriMo novel. It was written while I was still heavily influenced by Star Wars and it fails. I want to write something original and hopefully fantasy.

I heard publishers are looking for ?????? mermaid stories for the next paranormal/fantasy genre. We've done vampires, werewolves, wizards, elves, witches, leprechauns, half-bloods, and mermaids are one of the few relatively untouched genres. So I was thinking about that, but it's kinda weird. I might try it though.

It might end up like Artemis Fowl though.

I also wanted to try this science fiction thing where this world is just an experiment/prototype for another world but the "new" world went terribly wrong and now it's up to the people from the "prototype" world to save it? Anyone with me? Anyone?

I also wanted to write a historical fiction about the medieval crusades, but that might take a lot of research, etc. and I really wanted to try fantasty again.

This is why so few books ever get written...sigh.

What are your writing inspirations?

  1. Mermaids are really coming back into the limelight once again. Great idea, and keep it going. Just be sure to keep it "fresh" -- not too "Little Mermaid" but not too "Twilight underwater" either.

Great job, and I'm thrilled to have found your blog through Qui. <3

  2. I write ninety-nine percent science fiction, so my inspiration comes from just about everything. Reading books and watching movies are a great source of inspiration for me, as is music.

  3. I think your science fiction idea sounds pretty interesting.

  4. The whole mermaid thing does seem to be turning into a hot genre. It might be a fun thing to try -- although I've heard that chasing the hot genre can often be discouraging, since it's more than likely that someone else will come up with an idea similar to your own. (And, by the time one can get a novel polished to perfection, the craze is often already over.) So I'd recommend doing a mermaid idea only if it inspires you personally.

On the other hand, I think that sci-fi idea about the test world is fascinating. I'm totally on board with that.

What inspires me? Hmmm... history, other people's writing, pictures, poetically-written nonfiction... really, just about anything that could be used as a jumping-off point for an idea.

  5. What are my writing inspirations? Hmmm, just family life. I write a lot of things through the perspective of big, funny families; not the perfect kind, mind you. The kind where the kids still bicker, people are spilling things all the time, and they go through traumatic animal incidents. I try to write about family life that is really family life, not something perfect and shiny. Because that can be boring. :P

I'm afraid fantasy is not really my thing. I've tried....and it came out SUPER cheesy....... *SIGHS*

So glad to see you posting more often; sorry that I can't comment on everything. :)

  6. Your sci-fi sounds like a blast!!

And I actually debated a mermaid myself. I just don't know if I truly want to go there or not.

Have you ever thought about doing a partner story? I'd be interested in doing one with you, that is only if your interested! Maybe it could help keep you on track and pushing forward on writer?

  8. Thanks everybody!
@Rachel-Haha! Thanks. :) I never read Twilight so it would probably be veering more towards "Artemis Fowl Underwater."
@Eldra-Me too! I read a lot so I always find inspiration from books.
@Cherise-Yeah, I don't know if mermaids inspire me personally or not. XD Do you know of any mermaid books that you like?
@Throughtwoblueeyes-Fantasy gives you more freedom but it also makes it kind of hard. I bet if you keep trying your fantasy will turn out great!
@Ashley-I'll think about it. Thanks! I'm honored that you'd be interested. Maybe I'll think on some ideas.
    @Alex, EFC:
I'm going to run with that. Thank you!

Thanks everybody so much! You have no idea how much all your comments brighten my day, especially when I'm too lazy to comment on other people's blogs. I'm remedieing that now and going around commenting. Thanks so much!

  9. Gah. Darn it.

I was thinking about doing a mermaid story for my next NaNoNovel. :P Phooey. Well, your idea seems more developed than mine anyway!!!!! And I've got another idea that I'm taking to more now...xD

Sounds really cool Amaranthine! :) You're an awesome writer, and I'm sure it will turn out great!

And I likey that picture at the beginning of this post. :) LOL!

Everything and anything inspires me. Star Wars, movies, TV, my chickens, my sister, my really spazzy brain, my friends, etc. The list goes on and on. xDD

three amazing--and relatively little known--psalms

So I'm reading Psalms in the Bible right now. Well, Psalms is one of the three places I read from. I'm reading the Bible all the way through and read two chapters from three places--the Old Testament, the middle of the Old Testament, and the New Testament--every day. I'm in Deuteronomy and Romans in the other sections, but in the middle I'm still right where I started from-Psalms. Cause Psalms is really really long. I was getting kind of tired of Psalms(which isn't really the right attitude to be reading the Bible in). But I realized there are some really breathtaking passages in Psalms, and I'm glad I read them. These are my three favorites: *Buck Forester on Flikr Psalm 65 This one is about God's spectacular creation. What mighty praise, O God,      belongs to you in Zion. We will fulfill our vows to you, 2       for you answer our prayers.      All of us must come to you. 3  Though we are overwhelmed by our sins,      you forgive them a

Ciel Phantomhive vs. Artemis Fowl

Don't laugh. XD The similarities between the two characters are so distinct and obvious that comparison is inevitable for anyone who's read/watched both series. I seriously thought when I first noticed Black Butler(more popularly referred to as Kuroshitsuji) that it was literally an anime adaption of Artemis Fowl.  Other people have read Artemis Fowl and thought "CIEL HAS A CLONE??!?" So I thought I'd outline some of the differences and analyze who would win. XD Similarities: Appearance:  This is the first similarity, and one of the most major, because if they didn't look so darn alike I don't think the comparison would have been as striking. The above picture of Artemis is a fanart, because there aren't really any good pictures of Artemis, and the manga style makes it more obvious. They are both from the British Isles and have black hair and blue eyes. Both of them lose/change/switch an eye resulting in two different colors.

I need book recommendations!

I heard this movie stunk. C'mon, I'm dying over here! In other, unrelated news, want to hear one of the most overrated book series I've ever read is? Alex Rider. I picked up Stormbreaker after legions of people going "READ ITZ AMARANTHINE TIS AMAZING". It was alright....I guess. I didn't...fall asleep or anything. But it was definitely not mind blowing. For starters, Alex is way underdeveloped as a character. He was a little funny and relate able but not on the same level as I was expecting. And he's a bit cliched in the fact that he's just generally smart and knows everything, without any explanation or emphasis. I guess you could say that he's only a genius when he needs to be, and it doesn't add any other levels to the story. Oh, and did I mention that he's well versed in martial arts too? Yeah. Ender could still kick his butt though. I guess it would be a good read for boys who don't read much. Definitely not YA lev
